FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
QUICK FIXES
Chronographs: The Hilts Chronographs use a Miyota 6S21 a quartz movement, meaning they don’t require winding like mechanical watches do. Instead, they are battery powered. If the watch stops or the chronograph functions become unreliable, the battery likely needs to be replaced.
Automatic Watches: The Sellita SW200-1 and SW221-1 Elaboré movements are automatic, which means it is powered by the motion of your wrist. If the watch hasn't been worn for some time, you can manually wind it by unscrewing the top crown counterclockwise. Wind the crown clockwise 10-20 times to get the movement going. Once worn, the rotor will continue to wind the watch as you move. After about 6-8 hours of wear, the mainspring will be fully wound, offering a power reserve of approximately 38 hours.
Chronographs and Mechanical/Automatic Watches: Unscrew the crown counterclockwise, pull it out to position 2, and rotate to adjust the hour and minute hands. When the crown is in this position, the second hand will stop. Adjust the time as needed.
Chronographs: Pull the crown out to the 1st Click Position. Turn the crown clockwise to set the date. *If the date is set between the hours of around 8pm and 2am, the date may not change on the following day. After the date has been set, push the crown back to the Normal position.
Field Watches: Gently pull the crown out to the first position. The SW221 movement features a quick-set date function, and this first position is used to adjust the date. Turn the crown clockwise to change the date. Like many movements, it’s essential to avoid setting the date when the time on the watch is between 8 PM and 4 AM. This period is when the date-change mechanism is active, and adjusting the date during these hours could potentially harm the movement. Once the correct date is set, push the crown back to its original position and screw it down to secure the watch and maintain its water resistance.
Chronographs: If the date on your Chronograph is changing at noon instead of midnight, it's likely that the watch is set 12 hours off. To correct this, pull the crown out to the second position and rotate the hands forward by 12 hours. Once the hands are set to the correct AM/PM cycle, the date should change at midnight as intended. Afterward, check and adjust the date if necessary.
Field Watch: The Sellita SW221 Elaboré may display the date change at noon if the time is incorrectly set. To resolve this, pull the crown to the second position and turn the hands forward by 12 hours. This adjustment will ensure that the date changes at midnight as it should. Once this is done, review and reset the date if necessary.
Chronographs: If your quartz chronograph stops ticking, it likely needs a new battery. We recommend taking it to a professional watchmaker for battery replacement to ensure the water resistance remains intact.
Mechanical/Automatic Watches: If your mechanical or automatic watch isn’t running, it may need to be wound. For both the Sellita SW200 (Diver and Aviator) and SW221 (Field) movements, wind the crown clockwise until you feel resistance, which typically occurs after about 20-30 full turns for a fully unwound watch. These movements are equipped with a unidirectional winding rotor, meaning they can also be wound by the motion of your wrist. If the watch still doesn’t start after winding, gently shake the watch to initiate the movement.
If your watch has been exposed to water and stops working, immediately dry it off and take it to a professional for inspection. Even if your watch is water-resistant, water ingress can occur if the crown was not fully secured or if seals are worn out.
Chronographs: Quartz movements like the Miyota 6S21 are known for their precision and should rarely run fast or slow. If you notice a significant deviation, the first step is to check the battery. A low battery can sometimes cause timing issues, so it may need replacement. If the problem persists after a new battery is installed, the movement may require servicing by a professional watchmaker.
Mechanical/Automatic Watches: The Sellita SW200 and SW221 elaboré movements, like other mechanical movements, can naturally gain or lose a few seconds each day. The tolerance is ±7 seconds. However, if your watch is consistently fast or slow beyond acceptable limits, it may need regulation by a professional watchmaker. Regular maintenance and servicing every 3-5 years are essential to keep the movement running accurately.
If your watch suddenly starts running much faster than usual, it’s likely that it has become magnetized. This can happen if the watch has been exposed to strong magnetic fields from electronic devices like laptops, smartphones, household appliances, or speakers.
To check if your watch is magnetized, try using a compass. Slowly move your watch near the compass (a digital compass or an app on your phone works too). If the compass needle moves noticeably when the watch gets close, it’s a sign that your watch is magnetized.
To fix this, you’ll need a demagnetizing tool, which is something a local watchmaker can usually provide, or you can buy one for around £10/$15.
How to Use a Demagnetizer:
- First, make sure your watch is not running. Allow the power reserve to deplete, and pull out the crown to stop the movement.
- Hold the watch about half an inch (1 cm) above the smooth surface of the demagnetizer.
- Press and hold the button on the demagnetizer, and the light should indicate that it’s working.
- While keeping the button pressed, slowly lift the watch until it’s about a foot (30 cm) away from the device, then release the button.
This process completes one demagnetization cycle. Afterward, use the compass to check if the watch is still magnetized. Repeat the steps if necessary until the watch is fully demagnetized.
Chronographs: A skipping second hand often indicates that the battery is low and needs to be replaced soon.
Mechanical/Automatic Watches: If the second hand is moving irregularly, the watch might need winding or could require servicing if the issue persists.
The crown should be snug to maintain water resistance but not overly difficult to pull out. If it feels stuck, try gently rotating it back and forth while pulling. If it remains stiff, consult a watchmaker, as forcing it could damage the mechanism.
If your strap or bracelet feels loose, check the spring bars (the small metal rods that attach the strap to the watch case) to ensure they’re secure. If necessary, replace them with new ones. For bracelets, adjust the clasp or remove/add links to achieve a snug fit.
Case and Bracelet: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down your watch. For more thorough cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth and mild soap for metal parts, then dry thoroughly. Avoid getting the leather strap wet.
Leather Strap: Clean the strap with a dry cloth. For deeper cleaning, use a specialised leather cleaner, but avoid soaking it in water.
